Most Popular Roles in League of Legends (2023)

League of Legends, developed by Riot Games, is a popular MOBA game first released in 2009. It has millions of active players and generates billions in revenue. One of the advantages of playing League of Legends is the numerous options and different roles, but some players might need help to determine their main roles.

In League of Legends, there are five different popular roles:

1. Top Lane
2. Jungle
3. Mid Lane
4. Bot Lane (ADC)
5. Bot Lane (Support)

Top Lane

The top lane in League of Legends is one of the most important roles in the game. It is a solo lane, which means that the player must be able to hold their own against their opponent. The top lane is typically home to tanky champions who can soak up damage and protect their team such as (Dr. Mundo / Cho’gath / Garen), as well as bruisers who can deal significant damage while also being able to take a hit such as (Shen / Gnar / Volibear).

If you’re looking to improve your top lane gameplay, there are several things you can do. One of the most important things is to understand your champion’s strengths and weaknesses, this will allow you to make informed decisions about when to engage in fights and when to play defensively. Additionally, map awareness is crucial for top laners, as they need to be able to respond quickly to threats on other parts of the map.

Teleport, this summoner spell is mainly used by Top lanners as they are isolated from the rest of the map. Teleport helps the top laners to support their teammates in team fights and If you are not sure how it works, it simply lets them Teleport anywhere on the map keeping in mind that this area has to be warded, or simply teleport to the nearest minion/tower.

Jungle

The gameplay in the jungle is unique and distinct from all other lanes in the game. As with any other lane, it has different phases. Starting phase, mainly focuses on farming your jungle monsters (Bot side/Topside), late invades, and/or scuttle crap clashes. Moving into the second phase, this phase requires the jungle to help other laners beat their opponents by ganking them and/or diving them under turrets, taking control of objectives (Drakes/Rifts).

There are different types of Junglers in League of Legends Juggernauts (Udyr, Trundle, and Shyvana), Divers (Warwick, Lee Sin, and Vi), Assassins (Evelynn, Rengar, Kha’zix), Skirmishers (Kayn and Master Yi), and Vanguards (Zac and Sejuani). Each one of them has different playstyles, some of them are tanky and mainly used as frontline, and some others focus on assassinating the backline.

Jungle is one of the hardest roles to master, as you need to pay attention to everything that happens in the game.

Mid Lane

Mid-lane is an impactful role in matches, similar to Top Lane as both are solo lanes. It requires farming, roaming, and helping the jungler.

Mid-lane champions are typically mages (AP) or assassins (AD), chosen for their ability to leave the lane and roam to help other lanes. Counter-picking is also an important factor, as a bad or unfamiliar matchup can set you severely behind. Some popular mid-lane champions include Katarina, LeBlanc, Zed, Lissandra, Xerath, and Ziggs.

As a mid-laner, it is crucial to stay vigilant and keep an eye on potential gank paths, the river, and the jungle. Warding these areas is essential to maintain vision and avoid being caught off guard. Additionally, before roaming, it is important to push your minion wave to safeguard your tower and prevent the enemy from taking it. By doing so, you can maintain control over the map and keep your team ahead.

ADC – Attack Damage Carry

ADC or Attack Damage Carry is one of the Important key factors to win in League of Legends. ADCs are primarily played with ranged champions that rely on basic attacks such as (Vayne, Ezreal, and Varus). They are the primary sustained damage dealers in a team and rely on powerful auto-attack damage to defeat minions, monsters, and opposing champions.

The role of an ADC is to deal tons of damage while staying alive. They primarily use their long-range attacks to kite enemies. ADCs are typically played in the bottom lane with a support champion to help them farm and stay safe.

The role requires a high level of skill and game knowledge, as they need to maintain farming, trade with their opponents, keep an eye on the enemy jungler, and position themselves effectively in team fights.

Support

The support is one of the two champions assigned to the bottom lane alongside the ADC. This role’s initial goal is to assist their more vulnerable teammate through the earliest stages of the game, ward, help other lanes, stun the enemy team, and/or shield their allies.

There are different types of support champions in League of Legends. Enchanters (Lulu, Soraka, and Janna), Catchers (Blitzcrank, Thresh, and Pyke), and Burst Mages (Lux, Brand, and Karma).
